Argentina entered the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA with high expectations after a strong qualifying campaign, and they began impressively by defeating Greece 4–0 and beating Nigeria 2–1 in the group stage. Diego Maradona played a key role in the early matches, scoring against Greece and looking sharp as a creative leader, but his tournament was cut short when he was removed from the competition after testing positive for ephedrine following the Nigeria match.
